Dear Parents, Friends and Students of Our Lady of Lourdes

Welcome: We welcome Esther (Year 5), Anne (Year 6) and their families to the OLOL community. I know you will love your time here at our fabulous school.

Open Night: I look forward to catching up with you at this evening’s Open Night. The classrooms look fantastic, and I can’t wait to see some of the outstanding performances in the undercover area that will only enhance this fabulous event. Remember to pick up some dinner, organised by our P&F, before heading home and thank you to all the families who contributed to the bake sale.

St Mary of the Cross & The Assumption: It is a very busy week for celebrating a couple of important Feast days in the church. On Tuesday 8 August we celebrated the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary, who together with Julian Tenison-Woods, founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, is an extra special figure to all Australian Catholics being our first Australian saint. A week later, on Tuesday 15 August, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption when according to our faith, the Holy Mother, “having completed her course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”.  All parents are invited to join us as a school and parish community at Tuesday’s Mass at 9am.

Year 6 Camp: Good luck and safe travels to our Year 6 campers who head to Waroona next Wednesday. The timetable is filled with many exciting activities Forest Edge has to offer and we pray that the weather is kind. Thank you to Mr Dobbie, Mrs Giorgio, Ms Fusco and Mrs Vivante for going along for the ride. I look forward to catching up with the campers later in the week when I pop down for a visit.

Faction Cross Country: On Friday, Year 3-6 students will head to Woodchester Oval to compete in our Faction Cross Country Carnival. The morning will commence at 9am and I hope to see many families and friends down to support our competitors as they push through the boundaries of endurance. It is always fabulous to see the MJR spirit during our sporting events, especially when displaying the E in WEST as we encourage every competitor to do their very best.

NSI School Climate Survey: There are still a couple of days left for parents to complete the school climate survey produced by NSI. If you have not already done so, please head to the website www.NSIPartnerships.com.au and enter the code OLLSPACS to gain access to the survey. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Uniform Reminder: A reminder for the girls who wear long trousers during winter that they are to be worn with navy socks instead of white socks.

MJR – Spirit of Jesus ‘Shout Outs’: Here are a few ‘SOJ Shouts Outs’ from around the community this past fortnight:

  • A group of Year 5 boys breaking into song to sing Mrs Miranda ‘Happy Birthday’ while ordering their ice blocks at lunch time on Wednesday 26 July
  • Miss Brown using her own DOTT time to educate our Pre Primary parents on the importance of reading and essential aspects to assist their own children when reading at home
  • Samyar (Year 3) putting the biggest smile ever on his sister’s face when he came to see her in sick bay after she had hurt herself
  • Ashantie M (Year 5) translating a class note into Portuguese for a new student in her class to understand and feel included

God Bless and stay classy OLOL

Ring Pulls

We are still collecting the ring pulls from soft drink cans. These are donated to Brother Ollie, who uses them to assist in making wheelchairs for children around the world affected by disease and landmines.

Please bring them to your class teacher.

Thank you

St Vincent de Paul Clothing Bin

We have a St Vincent de Paul clothing bin which is located near the Flinders St gate on the oval side of the school. You are able to donate all your unwanted good quality clothing, manchester, books, kitchenware (no glass items) and childrens’ toys that you no longer needed. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the front office.

Battery Recycling

Recycling batteries is good for the environment. It keeps them out of landfill, where heavy metals may leak into the ground when the battery casing corrodes, causing soil and water pollution. If batteries are incinerated with household waste, the heavy metals in them may cause air pollution.
Remember that you can recycle your household batteries at school. Please deposit batteries in the specially provided container in the front office.

We can all play our part to reduce landfill and help save the planet.
