Dear Parents, Friends and Students of Our Lady of Lourdes

Multilingual Library Launch: We are very excited to be launching our Multilingual Library next Wednesday 15 May. This initiative started with our school successfully receiving a grant offered by CEWA to create a Multilingual Library to serve our high number of families where English is as an Additional Language and/or Dialect. All OLOL families are invited to attend the Launch that commences in the Hall at 9am and children are invited to wear cultural dress on the day. For catering purposes, could all parents please RSVP to the front office if you are planning to attend. Thank you to Josephine Vivante, Joanne Quesnel and Anne Fusco who all played a vital role in the creation of our Multilingual Library.

Mother’s Day Celebrations: We look forward to hosting our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast on Friday morning. Please join us in the Hall from 7:30am for a ‘cuppa’ and bite to eat before our Year 1 Class Assembly at 9am. The P&F has also organised a Mother’s Day Stall that will be operating during the morning for students to pick up a special gift for their mums in preparation for Sunday.

OLOL P&F: We had another great turnout for our Term Two P&F meeting last Wednesday. Some big events were discussed including the House Fundraiser, Mother’s Day Stall and PJ & Hot Chocolate Day. You can see the minutes from the meeting by accessing the ‘Parents & Friends’ page on our school website. If you are available, we would love to see you at our next meeting that will be held on Wednesday 31 July.

Parent/Teacher Interviews: Parent/Teacher interviews will be taking place during Week 7 this term (Mon 27/5 – Thurs 30/5). All families will receive instructions on how to book your appointment online using the PTO application. These interviews are a wonderful way to build positive, healthy relationships between home and school, which are vital for your child to flourish in the educational setting.

NAP Science Test: On Monday 13 May, our Year 6 students will take part in a new National Assessment Program that will be used to measure their performance against national standards in science literacy. Our school will also be able to analyse the results to review, plan and adapt our teaching and learning programs in the science curriculum area.

Parent Volunteer Form: A reminder from last fortnight’s newsletter where I explained the new procedure for parent volunteers in schools. If you are hoping to volunteer your time in the classroom, on an excursion or at a sporting carnival, you must complete the online declaration form that was emailed to all parents on Thursday 18 April. Thank you to those parents who have already completed the form.

The Resilience Project Takeaway: As mentioned in the Week 2 Newsletter, over the holidays, many staff members read a very inspiring book titled, ‘The Resilience Project: Finding Happiness through Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness’ written by Hugh van Cuylenburg. In the book, Hugh writes about moments in his life that led him to search for the key steps to leading a happier, more contented and fulfilling life. He recognised the traits and behaviours that stood out above all others were practising gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. Here is my first takeaway I wanted to share with you:

Gratitude: the ability to pay attention to what you have instead of worrying about what you don’t have.

Do you practise gratitude in your daily life? How can you promote gratitude in your household with your family (eg. Naming something you are grateful for before going to bed or writing down three things you were grateful for during the day).

MJR – Spirit of Jesus ‘Shout Outs’: Here are a few ‘SOJ Shouts Outs’ from around the community this past fortnight:

  • Mrs Fusco, even when not feeling 100%, painting our faction tables during the holidays
  • Skylar (Year 2) collecting all the lunch tubs and returning them to the Canteen
  • Mrs Bayer & Mrs Fusco (OLOL Eco Warriors) always sorting recycling and preparing lunch for our worms
  • Veronica (Kindy) seeing a friend with no one to play with and went to offer support and kindness

God Bless and stay classy OLOL

Running Club

Don’t forget Running Club tomorrow morning. Parents please remember to drop your children at school before 8am. Any late comers to the oval will need to be taken back to school.

St Vincent de Paul Clothing Bin

We have a St Vincent de Paul clothing bin which is located near the Flinders St gate on the oval side of the school. You are able to donate all your unwanted goods, quality clothing, manchester, books, kitchenware (no glass items) and childrens’ toys that you no longer need. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the front office.

Ring Pulls

We are still collecting the ring pulls from soft drink cans. These are donated to Brother Ollie, who uses them to assist in making wheelchairs for children around the world affected by disease and landmines. Please bring them to your class teacher.  Thank you.

Battery Recycling

Recycling batteries is good for the environment. It keeps them out of landfill, where heavy metals may leak into the ground when the battery casing corrodes, causing soil and water pollution. If batteries are incinerated with household waste, the heavy metals in them may cause air pollution.

Remember that you can recycle your household batteries at school. Please deposit batteries in the specially provided containers in your child’s classroom or the front Office.

We can all play our part to reduce landfill and help save the planet.

The Munch Box

Parents, please note that OLOL is an ALLERGY AWARE SCHOOL. This means no nuts, peanut butter, nutella or bars/cakes containing nuts.
