Dear Parents, Friends and Students of Our Lady of Lourdes

Welcome Back: If I have not yet had the opportunity to greet you in person, I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all OLOL families to Term 2.  I hope everyone enjoyed a blessed Easter and some special family time, ready for yet another action-packed term. I am away this week and will return in Week 3. Thank you to Mr Gray for leading the school in my absence.

ANZAC Day: We commemorate ANZAC Day this Friday 26 April with our Year 5 class leading our annual service. All families are invited to our ANZAC Ceremony in front of the flags/Mercy Cross at 2:30pm.

A ‘shout out’ to Angelo and Kennedy (Year 6 students) who will be representing our school at the Mt Lawley RSL ANZAC Service.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

‘Lest we forget’

New Volunteering Procedure: Last week, all parents received an email outlining a new process that Catholic schools must undertake to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and the prioritisation of child safety. If you are planning on volunteering your time in classrooms, on excursions or sporting carnivals in 2024, it is a requirement that you complete the online declaration form. The link is again provided below.

Mother’s Day Breakfast/Stall: We will be celebrating our special mothers, grandmothers and female figures at OLOL with a Mother’s Day Breakfast on Friday 10 May. Breakfast will be provided in the undercover area from 7:45am. For catering purposes, please keep an eye out to RSVP if you will be attending.

The P&F will be hosting their Mothers’ Day stall in the undercover area from 8.00am on Friday 10th May. Children can purchase a gift for mum from $2.00 to $12.00.

OLOL P&F Meeting: After such a successful P&F meeting in Term One, we are hoping to have even more parents join us for our Term Two meeting on Wednesday 1 May in the Staffroom at 5:30pm. The meeting agenda will be uploaded to the school website.

Hall Flooring: Over the holidays, the remainder of the Hall floor was sanded and polished and it looks amazing! Make sure to check it out the next time you are at a Class or Prayer Assembly.

WA Student Assistance Payment: Please ensure that you have read the correspondence that has been sent home prior regarding the WA Student Assistance Payment. Make sure to follow the instructions required to lodge your claim.

MJR & Wellbeing: Last term, many staff members read a very inspiring book titled, ‘The Resilience Project: Finding Happiness through Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness’ written by Hugh van Cuylenburg. In the book, Hugh writes about moments in his life that led him to search for the key steps to leading a happier, more contented and fulfilling life. He recognised the traits and behaviours that stood out above all others were practising gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. I highly recommend this book to all OLOL families. In coming newsletters, not only will I share ‘Spirit of Jesus (SOJ)’ moments from the fortnight, I will also share some key takeaways I learnt from reading Hugh’s book.

God Bless and stay classy OLOL

2024 Noongar Seasons Project

Kaya! Hello!

During the school holidays, the Noongar Season changed from Bunuru to Djeran. Djeran occurs from April to May and it is connected to the colour green. Usually, Djeran is an end to the really hot weather with cooler nights and early morning dew on the ground. There are more light cool breezes which often carry many flying ants travelling to new homes.

Djeran is the time of red flowers, often seen on red flowering gums or the red seed cones on the sheoaks. Banksia begin to bloom too, displaying their orange red flowers. Kooyar (frogs) return to the Bilya (water ways) with kinjarling (rain) starting to occur.

Traditionally, Mia-Mias (tents) were mended and turned to face away from the west in readiness for the colder, wetter weather that would soon come.

Thank you to Pre-Primary who created the Noongar Seasons Display for Djeran outside of Year 6. Take a look to find out more about Djeran.

St Vincent de Paul Clothing Bin

We have a St Vincent de Paul clothing bin which is located near the Flinders St gate on the oval side of the school. You are able to donate all your unwanted goods, quality clothing, manchester, books, kitchenware (no glass items) and childrens’ toys that you no longer need. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the front office.

Ring Pulls

We are still collecting the ring pulls from soft drink cans. These are donated to Brother Ollie, who uses them to assist in making wheelchairs for children around the world affected by disease and landmines. Please bring them to your class teacher.  Thank you.

Battery Recycling

Recycling batteries is good for the environment. It keeps them out of landfill, where heavy metals may leak into the ground when the battery casing corrodes, causing soil and water pollution. If batteries are incinerated with household waste, the heavy metals in them may cause air pollution.

Remember that you can recycle your household batteries at school. Please deposit batteries in the specially provided containers in your child’s classroom or the front Office.

We can all play our part to reduce landfill and help save the planet.
