Dear Parents, Friends and Students of Our Lady of Lourdes

Reason for Absence: Just in case you were wondering why you haven’t seen me around this week, the reason is I have been on jury duty. It remains ongoing, and I hope to be back at school before the end of the week. I feel blessed to have such a fabulous staff that keep the school humming in my absence.

Harmony Day: OLOL is currently celebrating Harmony Week. The week is celebrated across the entire nation as we recognise our country’s rich cultural diversity. The event is very close to our hearts at OLOL with our culturally diverse population. Today we celebrated with a Harmony Day parade. Students were invited to come to school dressed in their national dress, or dressed in the colour orange, which relates to freedom of thoughts and encourages people to develop mutually respectful conversations. Happy Harmony Week everyone!

Spirit of Jesus (SOJ) Shout Outs by Parents: It has been so nice to hear of Spirit of Jesus Shout Outs being communicated to teachers by the parent community. As we know, MJR is 24/7 and teachers are not always on hand to see all SOJ moments that occur in our community. I strongly urge parents to get onboard with spotting and acknowledging SOJ moments and remember that it is not only students who spread the MJR message but adults as well.

NAPLAN: Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 5 students who have been completing the NAPLAN tests this last week. Each student has approached the assessment with a positive attitude, which is all we can ask for. The testing window concludes on Monday 27 March.

Stations of the Cross: We have decided to continue our Stations of the Cross pilgrimage that was put in place last year when dealing with COVID restrictions. Classes have been allocated stations that they will depict through artwork. These will then be placed around the school during Week 10. The students will participate in a pilgrimage around the stations following a guided prayer as they reflect and walk with Jesus in the moments before his death. Members of the parish will be joining us on the pilgrimage on Tuesday 4 April at 9:45am and parents are also invited to attend.

MJR – Spirit of Jesus ‘Shout Outs’: Here are a few ‘SOJ Shouts Outs’ from around the community this past fortnight:

  • Samuel (Year 3) collecting his friends lunch boxes from the undercover area
  • Nevan, Henry & Jayden (all in Year 5) picking up rubbish not belonging to them before going to play
  • Kapuki (Year 4) spotted by a couple of OLOL parents, making sure a younger child crossed the road safely while walking back to school after Running Club
  • Esther (Year 1) looking after a friend who had fallen over and needed attention
  • Kaitlyn and You (Year 5) playing beautiful reflection music during communion at last Friday’s St Patrick’s Day Mass
  • Miss Welch for jumping in to facilitate NAPLAN tests while Mr Blake is away

God Bless and stay classy OLOL

Steve Blake
Principal

Term 2 Swimming Lessons

This year, swimming lessons for our students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 start on Wednesday 26th April (Term 2, Week 1) and conclude on Friday 5th May. These lessons will take place at Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre, Inglewood.

Please make sure your child/children are equipped with bathers, towels, rash vests/t-shirt, goggles, thongs/slippers, and a warm jumper/hoodie so they can participate effectively in the lessons.

All items should be clearly labelled with students’ names. Students may come to school dressed in their sports uniforms for the duration of the lessons with their bathers and rash vests under their uniform.

The swimming forms were sent home on Monday, please complete the form and return it to your child’s class teacher by Monday 3rd April.

Thank you.

Harmony Day

Thank you to all the students and staff, for celebrating Harmony Day!

Italian Carnevale

As part of the Italian program the students have been learning about the Italian Carnevale.  Carnevale and Easter are two of the happiest times for Italian children and adults.  February is Carnevale time.

Adults and children dress up in colourful costumes and they wear masks.  There are delicious Carnevale biscuits to eat too.  Children play tricks on each other and they throw confetti on each other in the streets.  It is a fun time of the year.

The Year 3 students and the Year 5 students paraded around the school in their Carnevale costumes and masks.  They enjoyed themselves as did the students who saw the parade.
